Sam Altman, the erstwhile CEO of OpenAI, known for leading projects like ChatGPT and GPT-4, was unexpectedly dismissed on Thursday evening November 16th,2023 by the company's board of directors. OpenAI's longtime president and co-founder, Greg Brockman, resigned, alongside three senior researchers, indicating a significant shake-up within the company's upper echelons.

  • Board's Reasoning: During an all-hands meeting, OpenAI's Chief Scientist, Ilya Sutskever, defended the decision, asserting that it was necessary to uphold OpenAI’s mission of making AI beneficial to humanity, rather than a result of a "hostile takeover".

  • Investor Reactions and Pressure: Microsoft, a major investor and partner of OpenAI, expressed its commitment to the partnership and the future of AI innovation, despite the turmoil. Meanwhile, other investors have reportedly exerted pressure on the board to reinstate Altman, highlighting their concerns about a potential talent exodus and the need for stability.

  • Governance and Future Direction: The board has tentatively agreed to allow Altman and Brockman to return, subject to significant governance changes. However, the situation remains fluid, with ongoing negotiations and uncertainty about the company's long-term leadership structure.

Microsoft’s Leap into AI Dominance

Microsoft's Copilot for Microsoft 365 has shown remarkable outcomes in improving productivity and work quality. 70% of its users reported increased productivity, with significant time savings on tasks like writing and email processing. This tool has been widely adopted by enterprises, demonstrating its effectiveness in enhancing human work.

Microsoft has been rethinking its cloud infrastructure to integrate AI deeply. This includes partnerships with companies like OpenAI and the development of new Microsoft-designed AI chips, such as Azure Maia and Azure Cobalt, optimized for AI workloads and general-purpose tasks. The Azure Boost system is another leap forward, enhancing storage and networking speeds.

The Urgent Need for Global AI Policy and Governance

The Policy Network on AI (PNAI) delivered its first report in October 2023, focusing on AI governance from a Global South perspective, highlights the multifaceted nature of this challenge:

  • The PNAI emphasizes the need for interoperable AI governance, where various national and regional strategies can work together harmoniously. Addressing biases in AI systems is crucial for promoting gender and racial equality, and mitigating racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia in society.

  • AI and data governance topics need to be introduced in educational institutions to equip citizens and the workforce with the skills to navigate AI complexities. Capacity building for civil servants and policymakers is vital for developing and implementing responsible AI policies.

  • The environmental impacts of AI, including the energy required for training and supporting user queries, need urgent attention. Collaborative efforts are necessary to address challenges at the intersection of AI, data governance, and environmental conservation, especially in the Global South.

Jargon Decryption: AGI

  1. What is AGI?

    • AGI, also known as strong AI, full AI, or human-level AI, is a type of artificial intelligence that can understand, learn, and apply knowledge in a way that is indistinguishable from human intelligence. Imagine a robot or a computer program that can do any task that a human can, like having a conversation, solving complex problems, or even making art.

  2. Why is AGI Important?

    • AGI represents the ultimate goal of many AI researchers and companies because it promises a level of versatility and capability far beyond what's possible with current AI, which can only perform specific tasks (known as narrow AI). AGI can theoretically handle a wide range of tasks, adapting and learning much like a human does.

  3. Challenges and Tests for AGI:

    • Creating AGI is challenging. There's an ongoing debate about when, or even if, it will be achieved. Various tests have been proposed to measure AGI, like the Turing Test, where a machine has to convincingly imitate a human in conversation, or the Coffee Test, where an AI must navigate a typical home and make coffee. These tests check if an AI can perform everyday tasks that are simple for humans.

  4. AI-Complete Problems:

    • Some tasks are labeled as "AI-complete" or "AI-hard," meaning they're so complex that solving them would require AGI. These include things like understanding natural language fully or dealing with unpredictable real-world situations. Currently, these problems are too complex for AI to handle without human help.
